What Does It Mean to Be Saved?

“Saved…”  The Christian community uses this word with great frequency.  The Bible also uses this word quite a bit.  What does salvation (or being saved) mean?  In the New Testament’s original language, Greek, the word for salvation is “Soteria,” and the word for saved is “Sozo.”  Both of which mean the same thing, “completely whole, nothing missing and nothing broken, healed, set free, rescued, delivered, and alive.”  The Bible tells us that “whosoever shall call on the Name of Jesus shall be saved” (Acts 2:21 and Romans 10:13).  Jesus Christ is the Save-ior (misspelling intentional), He is the Savior, the one who Soteria’s us, the One who “Sozo’s” us.  He makes us completely whole; He makes us so that we have nothing missing and nothing broken in our lives.  He even said, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised” (Luke 4:18). To be “Saved” simply means to be in right relationship with God the Father through our Savior Jesus Christ.  He has rescued us from being separated from God, and He has made us alive spiritually. Today, if you do not know what it means to be saved, simply ask Jesus to show you.  Ask Him to come into your life and be your Savior.

The Plan of Salvation

First, admit your spiritual need: "There is none righteous, no, not one" (Romans 3:10). We can't make excuses or blame others and our circumstances for our actions. "For all have sinned and fall short of the Glory of God" (Romans 3:23)

Second, realize that Jesus died for you. "For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God..." (I Peter 3:18)

Third, repent. The word "repent" means "to change your direction." The Bible tells us, "Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord" (Acts 3:19). Repentance begins when you pray, “Lord, forgive me of my sins, and help me to turn from them.”

Finally, Ask Jesus to come into your life. It is vital that you come just as you are. Don’t try to clean up your own life before you come to Him. Don’t think, well, I need to quit drinking before I ask Him into my life, or I need to quit this-or-that. No, simply ask Him to come in, it is His job to strengthen you and help you turn from sin.

Let’s pray now. Lord Jesus, I admit I’m a sinner, and I need you. You died for me so that I could have a relationship with God. I confess that I have sinned and my sin has kept me from you. Forgive me. I ask you to come into my life, now. I receive you, and I confess you as my Savior. Thank you for saving me and forgiving me of all my sins. Amen.
