Text Box: The Power of Life and Death

Proverbs 18:21 says that Life and Death are in the power of the tongue.  It is so easy to forget that.  As I think about what all I have spoken about in the past 24 hours … some things wholesome, good, and edifying… and some things not so much.  Sometimes, I forget to shut up for a second and think about what I’m about to say.  Our tongues (our words) are the keys by which the Will of God is opened, shut, freed, and/or bound in our lives.

The Word of God says that when we speak rashly (impulsively, recklessly, thoughtlessly), we come to ruin, or ruin whatever we are speaking rashly about (Proverbs 13:3).  What are you saying about your job, your relationship(s), your home, your bills, etc?  Are you speaking to those things?  If not, you should start, but don’t say the wrong things, say the right things because LIFE and DEATH are in the power of the tongue.  Jesus said in Mark 11:22-24, when He cursed a tree and it died that we could get the same kind of results; He said that if we speak to mountains that are in our way and tell them to be removed, then they would have to obey the words of our mouths.

If you are in a relationship that is struggling, begin to speak life over it.  If your bills are pilling up, speak life.

How do we speak “Life?”  Is it just “speaking positively about things?  No.  Jesus said, “the Words that I speak to you, they are … Life” (John 6:63).  When we say what God says, we are speaking life.  For example, what does God say about your bills?  God says that He shall provide all your needs according to His riches in glory (Phil. 4:19).  What does God says about your health?  Look at Isaiah 53:5 and find out, then say what God has said.

Your words will set the course for your life (James 3:2-4).  If you’re going in a bad direction, change it through your words.  Begin to speak life.  If you’re struggling with a habit, speak to it.  Change the direction of your life by using the rudder of your tongue.

Some passages on the words of your mouth:

  • He who guards his mouth and his tongue keeps himself from calamity (Proverbs 21:23)
  • A wholesome tongue is a tree of life: but perverseness therein is a breach in the spirit (Proverbs 15:4)
  • If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless (James 1:26)

Do You Want More Power?  Do you want to experience the supernatural power of God and miracles more consistently in your life?  Then you definitely want to receive the infilling of the Holy Spirit.  The Holy Spirit is the member of the Godhead that is present in the earth to administrate God’s Presence and supernatural abilities among His children.

Word for Today

From Pastor Angela Brown

Being a teacher, I often hear students complain about what is and is not fair. This is sometimes true with adults as well. People are always willing to scream “Not Fair,” but the reality is that fair is not fair at all. A few definitions of the word are: not exhibiting any bias; according to the rules. When God sent Jesus to be a sacrifice for us on the cross, He took fair out of the equation. Fair for our sins would be certain death and damnation, but Jesus came to give us life to the fullest (John 10:10). God took fair out of the equation and replaced it with grace and mercy and I am grateful for it daily. God is a just God who offers us the opportunity to accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, offers unlimited repentance when we sin, and thankfully gives us grace and mercy to run this race of life.

Today and on, don’t cry out for fairness, cry out for forgiveness and grace.

Psalm 98:8-9

8 Let the rivers clap their hands,
Let the mountains sing together for joy; 9 let them sing before the LORD,
for he comes to judge the earth.
He will judge the world in righteousness
       and the peoples with equity.

Confession of Faith

From Pastor Joan Castle

(Say the following out loud during your devotional time, and meditate on these scriptural promises)

Father, I cease not to give thanks unto You for the blessings You have given me.  You deserve the glory, and the honor, and all the praise.  I praise You Lord God Almighty, creator of heaven and earth.  I worship and adore You Heavenly Father.  You are great and You do miracles so great.  There is no one else like You, no one who can even compare to You, oh Great and Mighty God.  What a Great and Mighty God I serve!  I keep falling in love with Him over and over again!

For when I am weak, You make me strong.  When I am down trodden, You lift me up and carry me under Your wing.  I abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.  I am kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another as God in Christ has forgiven me.  If I love then I abide in the light, and there is no occasion of stumbling in me.  I love one another with a pure heart.  God is love and every one that loves God is born of God and knows God!  I put on compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.  I bear with each other and forgive as the Lord forgave me.  I love in deed and truth.  For God is love and He is my love!

Growing For Sowing

Exceed to Seed

If God is giving you dreams and visions for something to accomplish here at New Covenant, then please, by all means share it with Pastor Randy.

Write it down and e-mail it:  Habakkuk 2:2 says, “And the LORD answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that reads it.”  Write down what God is showing you and share it.

2007 is a year of “Growing for Sowing.”  A time for us to continue to grow.  As we are set to enter into the hundreds here at this local church, let’s keep in mind that God has also called us to other cities, other nations, etc.

God is setting in motion events that will send various leaders here at New Covenant to the north, south, east, and west.  We’re not just going to call them in, we will go out.  So, 2007 will be the year that we grow in order to sow.  That we exceed where we are in order to seed in other places.

Keeping in mind that God has called this church, New Covenant Church of Atlanta, to be a local church.  We are here, and God has called us here to this city.  However, God has also called us to go out as well.  So, be praying about your place and what God has for you.  These are exciting times.  Let’s grow together!!!
